Downsizing Tips & Hints
Here are some great tips for downsizing your home or office:
1. Take it slow - If you are planning to move to a smaller home, give yourself a minimum of 6 months to sort and pare down.
- Start by eliminating those items you don’t use or need.
- Set a goal to give away a minimum of one box or bag every two weeks.
- Start in rooms with the least emotional attachment: guest rooms, basement, attic, garage, bathroom, etc.
2. Get help - The sorting and paring down process can be overwhelming physically, as well as mentally. The longer we’ve had some items, the stronger the emotional attachment.
- Ask a trusted friend to assist with your project or,
- Consider hiring a Professional Organizer.
3. Sell unwanted items – Selling items you no longer need or want enables you to purchase things needed for your new home.
4. Eliminate paper! - We all keep way too much paper. Movers typically charge by the box or pound – do you really want to use resources to move these items?
- Old bank statements, bill receipts, and tax returns that have been around more than seven years can go to the shredder.
- Let go of old magazines and newsletters.
5. Color code – Use color coded stickers like 3M Post It Label Pads to designate what you’re keeping, what you’re selling, and what you’re giving away.
- Segregate keep/sell/give away items by designating a spare room or area for each category.
- Before donating items to charity, ask yourself, “Is this something I would be proud to offer to a family member or a friend?” If the answer is “Yes”, by all means, put it into the donate box or bag. If the answer is “No”, put it into the trash or recycle bin.
Finally . . .
If you’re having trouble with the decision-making process, ask yourself these questions:
- When was the last time I used it?
- Does it bring me pleasure?
- If I were out shopping today, would I buy it?
- Am I keeping it because someone gave it to me?
